My mom has been visiting this week, and since it’s been nearly a year since I last saw her I haven’t had much time for blogging. But as you can imagine, many scrumptious things have been appearing in my kitchen while she’s here – including the luscious apple pie pictured here. On Saturday we went horseback riding, then stopped by the apple farm, and with nearly three bags of apples filled to the brim something had to be done. This recipe for Cinnamon Crumble Apple Pie was a good place to start, and we enjoyed our slices with vanilla ice cream, hot tea, good conversation, and once while watching a “chick flick” on TV. We also made apple turnovers, but I’m not posting a picture of those because I plan to share the recipe in the near future.
Mom leaves tomorrow so I hope you’ll understand if, rather than spend more time in front of my computer, I share the rest of what we’ve been up to in image rather than word form. Click on the “read the rest of this entry” link to see some of our photos – heck, if a picture is worth 1,000 words, this is my longest post yet.
More recipes this weekend – until then!

Awww..so sweet..Time spent with mom is the best. And you guys are doing such cool things. I’ve been dying to go to Max Brenners but haven’t been to NY since it opened up. love the apple pie. Have you heard of dosha?? I’m sorry..it’s a silly joke in my head!! Doshas are energy forces in your body (according to ayurveda). Cooked apples are good for balancing doshas. I just posted an apple cake and named it dosha cake. And here I see this wonderful dosha apple pie. Ok…I’m not going to ramble on your space any more! Have fun with mom.

Oh, I want to see the Duchess as well. What a great looking apple pie.
Hope you enjoy the visit with your mum.
The pictures are so fantastic! I love the one with the horses.. and the one with the flowers in front of the door.
I love anything with apples so an apple crumble is my definition of a treat. But somehow, I’ve never managed to get it just right. Will try this recipe and hope I don’t mess this one up (although I can never get results as good as yours even if i don’t mess anything up!)
Yummm…am off to bake it, then!

What a delicious looking pie!! Enjoy the rest of your time with your mom!
Wow, what a wonderful time to have with your mom! I can’t wait to try that apple pie. It will use up the rest of my apples beautifully.
shabby2chic » The recipe is linked in the post, the upcoming recipe is for the turnovers.
So glad you and your mom had fun! Your apple pie looks amazing!!
Sounds like you’ve had a fun (and delicious) time with your mom! Not much of that pie is left, but I can see why.
Jan » All my food photos are taken with a Nikon D70, but I have a smaller Canon camera that I use to take photos when I’m in the city or something like that. Did you want camera info for just the food photos or the other images as well?
Specs » Give it a try and if you have any questions feel free to email or IM me. I’m always happy to help.
Hélène » Ha, my mom doesn’t pay for the groceries, but she’s up for all kinds of kitchen projects! We have a good time together too.
Bharti » That is so interesting! I had never heard of doshas, but now I think I know why apple pie is such great comfort food – it balances my doshas!
(Love the name you gave your cake, btw.)
Looks like you had a wonderful time with your mom! Enjoy every minute of your time together!
I have pretty strong willpower when it comes to avoiding sweets, but I have a horrible weakness for homemade apple pie. I think I’ll have to try this one.
We were twins this weekend! I went apple picking as well, bought way too many apples, made a crumb topped apple pie and now I’m busily thinking up other apple recipes!
I’m glad you and your mom are having such a good time.

Apple pie is always a good idea! And here’s to wonderful visits with mothers! I usually get to see mine once a year, so it’s always a festive occasion!
It wasn’t until a co-worker of mine brought in a few of fresh picked apples from his own orchard that I remember how much better fresh apples are! I made some fabulous applesauce with a nice hint of lemone and cinnamon and an apple and sausage casserole/pie….I am now an apple snob and have difficulty making other apple products with store bought items.
That pie looks amazing (and looks like it might be gracing our Thanksgiving table…)! I really want to see The Duchess! I’m glad you liked it…I’ve heard mixed reviews.
And you went to Max Brenner! So jealous! YUM!
Hope you’re having a great time with your mom. Enjoy!
My friends just went apple picking this past weekend and brought us a huge bucket full of them, which is now looking like a centerpiece on our table. Pie would be WAY better than a centerpiece though!!

I was interested in both cameras…although I didn’t realize you use more than one. Your food photos are always stunning, and very detailed, and the pics you posted of your visit with your mom were also great. Do you prefer one over the other?
Jan » I always use the Nikon D70 for food photos, either with extension tubes and a manual lens (which creates a macro effect without the cost of a macro lens!) or with a AF-S Nikkor 18-70mm lens. The D70 captures more detail and almost always produces a lovely image. The other camera is a Canon PowerShot SD600 Digital Elph. It’s pocket size and perfect for traveling, and as you can see, takes great overall shots. I generally don’t use it for food photos though.
You had me at cinnamon crumble.
Annie’s mum is here, and she finally understands why we do this food blog. She actually asks if I’m going to photograph her food (which I do, of course!)

mmh… looks yummy!! we were supposed to go apple picking this weekend but Ali came down with a cold, so I’ll have to make do with apples from the farmer’s market. I definitely want to try this! My pie dish is shallow, though… does it work better with a deep pie dish?
Nancy’s last blog post -> photo.jpg
Nancy » The recipe “as is” does, because there are A LOT of apples piled on there before you bake the pie. But if you reduce the amount of apples slightly I think you’ll be fine with a shallow pie dish.
wow if you ate any more it would have been all gone, but I suppose that only means one thing it mus have been delicious.
